Every Stipend, Reimbursement, and Voluntary Benefit on One Platform
Education and career, family building, caregiving, work and mobility, wellness and lifestyle, and voluntary vendor benefits — twenty-three programs beside your core benefits.
Miscellaneous Benefits are the programs that make an employer distinctive — tuition and student loan help, adoption and fertility assistance, childcare and backup care, home office and relocation support, financial wellness, pet care, and the voluntary products employees buy through payroll. Benefits Reimagined administers all of them on the same engine as enrollment: each program is a versioned policy with its own limits, proof rules, and tax treatment; every claim is validated by BR IntelliVerify; and every reimbursement or deduction posts through SAP SuccessFactors payroll or any payroll you run — in the right wage type, the right W-2 box, and the right general-ledger account.

Reimagining Miscellaneous Benefits
"Lifestyle spending account vendors run stipends and leave voluntary benefits to a marketplace; marketplaces run pet insurance and legal plans and leave stipends to a card. Neither knows what Section 127, 129, or 137 allows, or which state still excludes moving expenses. Benefits Reimagined treats every one of these programs as a policy on the benefits engine — with a tax treatment, a limit that tracks year-to-date per employee, proof rules that IntelliVerify enforces, and a reimbursement or deduction that lands in the same paycheck as everything else. One catalogue, one claim flow, one enrollment window, one AI."

From Policy to the Right Line on the Paycheck
Follow the six program groups from the catalogue that defines them, through an employee's claim, the tax engine that classifies it, the vendor benefits enrolled beside it, and the analytics that show which programs are working.
Twenty-three programs, one policy model
Every program is administrator configuration, not a vendor contract: the eligible population, the annual or lifetime limit, the funding source, the proof required, the approval threshold, and the tax treatment. Education and career programs — tuition assistance, student loan assistance, professional development, certification and licensing, and professional membership dues — share a Section 127 and working-condition-fringe model. Family building covers adoption, fertility, and surrogacy assistance. Caregiving covers childcare, eldercare, and backup care. Work and mobility covers home office, internet and mobile, equipment, relocation, and housing assistance. Wellness and lifestyle covers financial wellness and a pet care allowance. Voluntary and vendor benefits — legal services, identity protection, pet insurance, discount programs, and other voluntary products — enroll in the same window as medical and deduct post-tax through payroll.
What it delivers
Education & Career — tuition, student loan, professional development, certification / licensing, membership dues
Family Building and Caregiving — adoption, fertility, surrogacy; childcare, eldercare, backup care
Work & Mobility and Wellness & Lifestyle — home office, internet / mobile, equipment, relocation, housing; financial wellness, pet care
Voluntary / Vendor — legal services, identity protection, pet insurance, discount programs, other voluntary benefits
Why it matters
Programs reflect your organization's goals — retention, skills, caregiving support, hybrid work — without a vendor per program.
Adding a program is a policy version with an approval step, live for the populations it names on its effective date.
A one-minute claim with intelligent validation
Employees submit from the BR mobile app or desktop and pick the program; BR IntelliVerify reads the receipt, invoice, decree, or servicer statement, extracts the provider, date, and amount, checks the category and the remaining limit, flags duplicates across programs and plan years, and confirms the proof the policy requires — a grade for tuition, a court decree for adoption, a provider invoice for backup care, a business-use note for equipment. The employee sees the outcome and its reason; clear claims auto-approve, uncertain ones go to a person with the evidence attached, and nothing is silently rejected.
What it delivers
Receipt, invoice, decree, and statement capture with automatic data extraction
Category, limit, and year-to-date check against the program and the employee's own balances
Duplicate detection across programs, plan years, and household members
Plain-language outcome with the policy line that decided it, and Athena to explain
Why it matters
Faster answers for employees, fewer tickets for HR, and no ineligible or unsubstantiated reimbursement slipping through.
A blurry invoice is "please retake the photo," not a rejection — the claim waits, the balance is held.
The right tax treatment, program by program
This is where lifestyle-account vendors stop and Benefits Reimagined continues. Each program carries its tax treatment as configuration: Section 127 educational assistance keeps tuition and student loan payments tax-free up to the annual limit, shared across both; Section 129 dependent care keeps childcare and backup care tax-free up to the exclusion; Section 137 adoption assistance applies its own limit and phase-out; home office, equipment, certification, and dues reimburse tax-free under accountable-plan rules when the receipt and business purpose are substantiated; relocation is taxable federally but still excluded in several states, so the engine applies the rule of the state of work; fertility, surrogacy, financial wellness, and pet care stipends are recorded as imputed income; and voluntary products deduct post-tax. Limits track year-to-date per employee, and the excess above any limit is reimbursed as imputed income rather than refused.
What it delivers
Tax-free within a Code limit — §127 education, §129 dependent care, §137 adoption — with year-to-date tracking per employee
Accountable-plan reimbursement — substantiated business-connected expenses reimbursed without imputed income
Imputed income — taxable stipends added to wages with FICA and withholding handled in payroll
Post-tax payroll deduction — voluntary carrier products with remittance and evidence of insurability where required
Why it matters
Tax-free where the Code allows it, imputed where it does not — and never a surprise on the W-2.
Regulatory limits are effective-dated parameters approved by someone other than the author; the 2027 indexing lands as a version, not a release.
Voluntary benefits in the same enrollment window
Legal services, identity protection, pet insurance, discount programs, and other voluntary products enroll in the same Open Enrollment and life-event flows as medical, dental, and vision — not in a separate marketplace with its own login. Rates come from the carrier or vendor, elections deduct post-tax through payroll, enrollment files go out through BR IntelliMap-mapped carrier connections, and terminations and leaves are handled by the same events that handle every other plan. Employees see one benefits summary; administrators reconcile one deduction register.
What it delivers
Legal services, identity protection, pet insurance, discount programs, and other voluntary benefits as plans on the enrollment engine
Post-tax deductions with carrier remittance, evidence of insurability, and age-banded or pet-specific rates
Carrier and vendor enrollment files through IntelliMap-mapped connections — AI mapping greatly reduces the integration timeline
Life events, leaves, and terminations applied to voluntary elections by the same rules as core plans
Why it matters
A marketplace adds a portal; Benefits Reimagined adds a plan.
Discount programs with no deduction still appear in the benefits summary and the total rewards view, so the value is visible even when nothing is withheld.
Real-time analytics & insights
Track participation, usage, and budget burn by program and group; run cohort analysis to see the impact by department, location, tenure, or role — retention of tuition participants, absence days avoided by backup care, hybrid employees using home office support. Every figure is as-of a date and traceable to the claims behind it, and the next program change is modelled before it is approved.
What it delivers
Participation and utilization by program, group, and population, with budget burn against pace
Cohort analysis — retention, absence, and engagement for participants versus peers
Forecasting of plan-year spend, forfeiture, and imputed-income exposure under current and proposed limits
Program design decisions rest on usage, not anecdotes.
Small cohorts are suppressed automatically, so a department of four never becomes identifiable.

Athena inside Miscellaneous Benefits
"Is This Covered, and Is It Taxed?" Answered Before the Purchase
Athena reads each program's policy, the employee's balances, and the tax rule behind them, so the two questions employees ask most — is this eligible, and will it show up as income — are answered before the receipt exists. For administrators, Athena explains why a claim was routed, spots duplicate and drift patterns, and models what a new program or a higher limit would cost, including the imputed-income side.
"Can I claim this?" — the category decision from the program's eligible list, the remaining limit, and the proof needed
"Will it be taxed?" — the treatment that applies — tax-free within the limit, accountable plan, or imputed income — in plain language
"Why was my claim sent to review?" — the threshold or proof rule that routed it, and what would let it auto-approve next time
Claim triage for admins — duplicates, provider concentration, and category drift surfaced with the claims behind them
Program modelling — "what if we add eldercare backup?" — cost by population and tax exposure, from current usage

I'm starting a certificate program in January. Can I use tuition assistance, and will it be taxed?
AthenaYes. Certificate programs at accredited providers are eligible under Tuition Assistance. You have $1,200 of this year's $5,250 Section 127 limit left, and the full $5,250 resets on January 1 — so a January invoice would be tax-free up to that amount. Because your student loan assistance shares the same limit, the $100 monthly loan payments would use $1,200 of next year's cap, leaving $4,050 for tuition before anything becomes taxable.

What if the program costs more than that?
AthenaAnything above the Section 127 limit is still reimbursed under your policy up to the program's $8,000 maximum — the excess is added to your pay as imputed income, so it's taxed like wages. I can show you the estimated take-home effect before you enroll, and you'll see the split on the claim itself.

Begin Personalizing Benefits Today
Miscellaneous benefits are a statement of what your organization values — learning, families, caregivers, flexible work — and they should be as governed as the medical plan. Benefits Reimagined runs them in the same console and mobile app as enrollment, on SAP BTP and AWS, so a new program reaches employees the day it is approved, its claims are validated the same way, and its reimbursements post through the payroll they already trust.
Admin: program catalogue — twenty-three programs as policy versions with population, limit, proof, threshold, tax treatment, and impact preview before approval
Admin: claims workbench — auto-approved, in-review, and declined claims with extraction, checks, and evidence; delegation and SLAs from the Workflow Control Tower
Admin: payroll and finance — reimbursements and deductions by wage type, tax-free / imputed split, GL codes per program, signed exports with receipts
Employee: programs and claims — balances across every program, a one-minute claim from the BR mobile app, voluntary elections in the enrollment flow, and Athena for "is this covered?"
Analytics: program intelligence — participation, burn vs pace, cohort impact, imputed-income exposure, and anomaly signals — as-of-dated with small-cohort suppression
Bring your program ideas, your current stipend policy, and one month of claims from your current vendor. We'll configure the programs with their tax treatment, run a claim from a phone to a paycheck, and show the participation view that tells you which ones are working.
The programs outside medical, retirement, and spending accounts that employers use to stand out: tuition and student loan assistance, professional development, certification and dues, adoption, fertility and surrogacy assistance, childcare, eldercare and backup care, home office, internet, equipment, relocation and housing support, financial wellness and pet care allowances, and voluntary products such as legal services, identity protection, pet insurance, and discount programs. Each is administered as a policy on the benefits engine with its own limit, proof rules, and tax treatment.
Usually, yes. Financial wellness, pet care, fertility, surrogacy, housing, and similar stipends are added to wages as imputed income and taxed like pay. Benefits Reimagined records the imputed income the day the claim is paid and shows the employee the treatment on the claim itself. Programs the Internal Revenue Code exempts — educational assistance, dependent care, adoption, and substantiated business expenses — are handled tax-free within their limits.
Tuition assistance and student loan assistance share one annual educational-assistance limit per employee. The engine tracks the year-to-date total across both programs, keeps reimbursements tax-free up to the limit, and reimburses anything above it as imputed income rather than refusing the claim — with the split shown to the employee and to Finance.
Home office, equipment, internet and mobile, certification, licensing, and professional dues can be reimbursed tax-free when the expense has a business connection, is substantiated within a reasonable period, and any excess advance is returned. BR IntelliVerify enforces the substantiation — provider, date, amount, and a business-use note where the policy requires one — so the reimbursement qualifies; unsubstantiated flat stipends are treated as wages.
No. Adoption assistance has its own exclusion and phase-out under Section 137, tracked per employee against the limit and the required documentation. Fertility and surrogacy assistance paid as a reimbursement program outside the medical plan is generally taxable, so it is recorded as imputed income. Both run on the same claim flow; only the tax treatment differs.
Moving-expense reimbursements are taxable at the federal level, but several states still exclude qualified moving expenses. The engine applies the rule of the employee's state of work per move, records the federal and state treatment separately, and supports a gross-up where your policy provides one.
Yes. Childcare, eldercare for a qualifying dependent, and backup care can be reimbursed under Section 129 up to the annual exclusion, with year-to-date tracking per employee; amounts above the exclusion, or care that does not qualify, are reimbursed as imputed income under your policy.
The same HRIS events that drive medical eligibility drive these programs: a leave pauses or continues accrual per policy, a transfer re-evaluates eligibility for the new population, and a termination closes the programs with the final claim window your policy defines — automatically, from the SuccessFactors or HRIS event, with the audit trail attached.
Yes. Voluntary and vendor benefits are plans on the enrollment engine: they appear in Open Enrollment and life-event flows beside medical, dental, and vision, deduct post-tax through payroll, and send enrollment files to the carrier or vendor through IntelliMap-mapped connections. Discount programs with no deduction still appear in the benefits summary.
Each approved claim posts to SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central Payroll — or any payroll you run — under the wage type its tax treatment requires, with the GL code configured for the program. Finance receives a signed export with the taxable and non-taxable split and every receipt attached; nothing is loaded to a separate card.
Yes. Historical claims, year-to-date limit usage, and plan-year balances can be bulk-imported with validation on entry — duplicates rejected, limits reconciled — so employees see their full history and their remaining limits on day one.
